Laura Robson won’t let nerves destroy title hopes again

Britain's Laura Robson reached her second successive Australian Open girls' final today and believes she won't be affected by the nerves which saw her miss out on the title last time.

The 16-year-old defeated Kristyna Pliskova, of the Czech Republic, 6‑3, 6-1 and now faces her twin sister, Karolina, tomorrow.

Despite being 22 months older, Pliskova could not match Robson and was broken five times on the way to the loss in 65 minutes.

Robson won the junior title at Wimbledon in 2008 but came up short in the final here six months later, losing against Ksenia Pervak in straight sets.

“I was nervous before that match but I don't think that will be the case this time,” she said.

“It is going to be really strange facing the identical twin of the girl I have just beaten but I am playing well and have a lot of confidence from reaching the quarter-finals in the senior women's doubles.”

Serena Williams warmed up for tomorrow's singles final against Justine Henin by partnering sister Venus to the doubles title.

They beat Cara Black and Liezel Huber 6-4, 6-3 but bizarrely Venus did not realise they had won until her sister told her. Serena immediately celebrated while Venus prepared for another game.

“I actually didn't know the score,” said Venus.

“I thought it was 5-2. I don't know how I lost track. I thought, She's really happy about this break. I've never seen her this happy. But I'll go with it'.”

After winning the doubles titles at Wimbledon and the US Open last year, the sisters can now claim a clean sweep of Grand Slam crowns by claiming the French Open title in May.
