Monye excited by Murrayfield atmosphere

13 Mar 2010

Ugo Monye insists England are ready to take on the world as they prepare to enter the Murrayfield cauldron for Saturday night's Calcutta Cup clash with Scotland.

The Harlequins winger has not played a Test in Scotland before but he knows about the hostile atmosphere England can expect at Murrayfield.

He said: "Everyone talks about their supporters, how passionate they are and those are the arenas you want to play in. I buzz off that atmosphere, whether they are for you or against you. If anything it concentrates you, you get more focused."

He added: "There is a real nice feeling that it is the 15 of you against the world. You don't look to your supporters to give you that extra gear you might need at times, it is the guy next to you.

"We lost the last time we played and we have to go out there and put that right and get our Six Nations back on track."

England's determination to beat Scotland is fuelled by the memories of the defeat to Ireland, when Tommy Bowe exploited a defensive howler to score the winning try five minutes from time.

In a deathly quiet Twickenham changing room immediately after the game, Martin Johnson told his players to bottle the emotions of anger and frustration and carry it with them to Edinburgh.

Johnson has told England to unleash two weeks' of hurt on the Scots and prove they have learned what it takes to win in the most hostile environments.

"We only had ourselves to blame for the defeat to Ireland. To say we have to improve sounds insignificant, we have to find a way of winning Test matches," said Johnson.

"You don't like to lose but that is part of the team's experience now. We will be better for the Ireland game. To sit in a losing dressing room after a Test match is not what you do it for, is it?"
