England fail to make breakthrough

16 Mar 2010

Bangladesh continued to frustrate England on the final morning of the first Test, surviving a tense first hour and the arrival of the new ball without loss.

There were a handful of edges and a decent leg before shout, but midway through the first session, sixth-wicket pair Junaid Siddique (90 not out) and Mushfiqur Rahim (61no) were still at the crease.

Bangladesh resumed on 191 for five with survival, rather than the notional target of 513, the only thing on their minds.

Runs, then, were a virtual irrelevancy in terms of the game but Mushfiqur will have taken personal pride in a push for four off Steve Finn that brought him a second half-century of the match in the second over.

England gratefully accepted the new ball as soon as it became available 15 minutes in, with Stuart Broad and Tim Bresnan desperately hoping to make the breakthrough.

Bresnan duly located Mushfiqur's outside edge with his third delivery of the morning but it landed just short of the cordon. In his next over he had Junaid fending away from his body but this time the thick edge zipped for four between two gullies.

Luck continued to go against the bowlers, Broad seeing a strong lbw appeal against Mushfiqur dismissed and then being edged past second slip by Junaid.

Meanwhile, with an attacking field leaving gaps on both sides of the wicket the Tigers' pair continued to chalk off landmarks. First Junaid went past his previous Test best of 78, with the hundred partnership close behind.

Midway through the session and with Graeme Swann about to be introduced, Bangladesh were 231 for five.
