Hull move up

31 Jul 2010

Mark O'Meley ran in two tries as Hull held off a second-half Harlequins revival to move into fourth place in the Engage Super League table with a 42-18 win at the Twickenham Stoop.

The visitors had opened up a 30-0 half-time lead, only for Quins to respond with three tries of their own before late scores from Jordan Tansey and O'Meley sealed the points.

Kirk Yeaman, Danny Houghton, Jordan Turner and Sam Moa were FC's other try-scorers while Luke Dorn, Will Sharp and Louis McCarthy-Scarsbrook crossed for Quins.

Hull eventually took the lead on 10 minutes through O'Meley bullocking his way under the sticks and they extended that six minutes later as Shaun Berrigan's beautifully-timed pass allowed Yeaman to stroll through a huge gap and touch down.

The visitors were also showing plenty of graft and grit in defence and, after a huge hit from Tom Briscoe dislodged the ball from Ben Jones-Bishop's grasp the ball was quickly recycled to allow Houghton to streak clear and cross under the posts.

And Hull were soon at it again, spreading the ball to both sides of the field before Turner stepped on the gas to surge in at the corner before Moa charged his way over the line to bring up the 30-point mark.

Harlequins got on the scoreboard through Dorn claiming an excellent Luke Gale chip to touch down under the posts.

Hull were seemingly content to sit on their lead and keep the hosts at arm's length and while Quins were having plenty of the ball, there was little play to quicken the pulse.

All that changed in a flash though on 65 minutes, Sharp fending off a couple of tackles and racing away from inside his own half to score.

Quins moved even closer with just under 10 minutes remaining, McCarthy-Scarsbrook rounding off a Chris Melling break with a strong run to the line, but Tansey's late score ended the jitters and O'Meley's second try put the seal on the victory.
