Dai Greene led Britain's second one-two of the European Championships in Barcelona, claiming gold in the 400 metres hurdles ahead of team-mate Rhys Williams.

Greene powered to a commanding victory in 48.12 seconds, lowering his own leading time in Europe this year with a new personal best.

And Williams, son of former Wales rugby winger JJ Williams, survived misjudging he final hurdle to claim silver in 48.96secs, also a new personal best. Ukraine's Stanislav Melnykov took bronze.

The Welsh duo train together under legendary coach Malcolm Arnold and had been confident all week the medals were theirs for the taking.

Greene, 24, won the European Under-23 title in 2007 while Williams won bronze in the senior championships in Gothenburg four years ago, when Greene failed to advance from the heats.

The result took Britain's medal tally to 14, with Michael Rimmer having earlier claimed silver in the 800m.

Greene said: "It felt pressurised being the favourite but the pressure helped me to focus and go faster.

"I didn't have any other objective than to win the gold medal and I'm very pleased to have secured a personal best at the same time."

Williams said: "It was a very fast race with almost all of the finalists improving their personal bests. I wanted to win and I'm not happy with the silver medal because my only objective was the gold.

"Four years ago I got the bronze, now the silver, but I want the gold in the next European Championships. Dai Greene is beatable, I will be back."
