Peter Odemwingie celebrates at Arsenal
Party time: Peter Odemwingie celebrates his strike

Good week, bad week

We round up who had a great weekend of sport, and those who were left tearing their hair out.

GOOD WEEK

West Brom
West Brom fans must have been out celebrating on Saturday night – their team had just beaten Arsenal on their own soil for the first time in the league since 1983.

Peter Odemwingie's toe-poked goal, Gonzalo Jara's strike – with a little help from Manuel Almunia's sloppy slip – and Jerome Thomas's third helped West Brom depose the Gunners 3-2.

“We deserved it,” said Baggies manager Roberto di Matteo. “The way we played, the way we created chances, scored goals. [We] played very well.”

Manchester City
The champions were eclipsed by the blue moon at the weekend.

During a tense tussle between Manchester City and Chelsea, Carlos Tevez proved the difference as his second-half solo strike earned his Eastlands side three points.

And how Tevez enjoys playing against Chelsea. His goal was his sixth in five league games against the blues. “I am very happy for him,” said City manager Roberto Mancini. “I am happy he scored, it was a fantastic goal.”

Sunderland
A week after Darren Bent scored his late equaliser against Arsenal, he and his Sunderland side were troubling Liverpool at Anfield.

Bent netted twice after Dirk Kuyt scored for the hosts and although Steven Gerrard equalised for Roy Hodgson's side, 2-2 was still a superb result for Steve Bruce's men.

Birmingham
Birmingham's 0-0 score line with Wigan is more pertinent than it appears. It means Birmingham are now 18 games unbeaten in the league at home. Such consistency should pay dividends come the conclusion of the season.

Robert Green
After the criticism come the compliments. And there was plenty of praise for Robert Green on Saturday.

His gallant goalkeeping kept Tottenham at bay as West Ham won 1-0. He dived left to keep out Rafael Van de Vaart, then to his right to repel another drive from the Dutchman. And Green's best save came as he tipped Luka Modric's screaming strike onto the bar.

BAD WEEK

Stuart Attwell
Attwell is not in Steve Bruce's good books. When Sunderland's Michael Turner knocked the ball back, the referee adjudged the movement as the start of his assigned free-kick, and Fernando Torres ran on to the ball before passing to Dirk Kuyt who scored.

Yet the intention of Turner was merely to spirit the ball to his keeper so that Simon Mignolet could take the set-piece.

Sunderland's manager was far from sanguine at the end of the game. “Absolute joke!” fumed Bruce.

Charlie Adam
The defender hardly helped his Blackpool side during their 2-1 defeat to Blackburn, as Adam headed into his own net to give Rovers the initial lead.

Although Ian Holloway was disappointed with the defeat, at least he exuded humour when asked about Adam's own-goal. “All you can do is laugh, really," reflected Holloway, adding "What a finish!"

Newcastle
The Tunes from the Toon were not ringing around St James' Park at the final whistle on Sunday afternoon.

Despite leading through Kevin Nolan's penalty, Newcastle conceded two second-half goals to Stoke City. After the elation of beating Chelsea midweek in the Carling Cup, the Magpies will be bitterly disappointed with this defeat.

Wolves
With Wolves being so close to shifting a little further away from the relegation zone with the score at 1-1 on Sunday, Emile Heskey's 88th-minute winner for Aston Villa was a bitter pill to swallow.

“We've been punished, harshly,” reflected Wolves' manager Mick McCarthy. “It was a fantastic goal by Heskey, but one we could have stopped”.

Elena Baltacha
Amid the list of withdrawals from the chaotically organised Commonwealth Games, Baltacha ruled herself out of the event on Saturday.

The women's British tennis number one, who was due to represent Scotland, cited health concerns as her reason.

“I suffer from a liver condition which is linked to my immune system and makes me susceptible to picking up infections,” said Baltacha. “I am now playing the best tennis of my career and I cannot afford to jeopardise that by getting ill.”

Steve Bruce - please stop whinging.

The free kick was taken from the correct position- Michael Turner was stupid to touch it if the keeper was going to take it.

What about the beach ball last year - you tw*t.
