Australian opening batsman Phil Hughes found himself in hot water today after revealing on Twitter he had been dropped before the Australians had officially announced their team.

The first two sessions in the Third Test at Edgbaston were washed out as rain fell allowing the tourists more time to ponder over their selection for the crucial match as teams do not have to be named until the toss is made.

It was initially decided by the Australian selectors that Hughes had not scored enough runs to keep his place and that Shane Watson would come in to replace him.

Hughes told Twitter: "Disappointed not to be on the field with the lads today, will be supporting the guys. Thanks for all the support."

The 20-year-old's agent, Neil D'Costa, confirmed that he posted the message on his client's behalf.

"These things happen," D'Costa said. "I guess things got confused with the time difference."

But D'Costa then claimed that bowler Ben Hilfenhaus was struggling with a stomach problem and that Hughes may now come back into the reckoning when play finally starts.

Former Australian batsman Dean Jones criticised Hughes' actions and said: "Announcing he has been dropped on Twitter is just wrong, he needs a good foot up the backside for that.

"He has broken a team rule and he has let the opposition know what's happened before the game has started."

Hughes has struggled in the two Ashes Tests so far, scoring 36, four and 17 at Cardiff and Lord's.

He also made seven and eight in the final warm-up match before the series began.
