Phillip Hughes has been given a slap on the wrist by Australian cricket chiefs after revealing he had been left out of the Third Test before the team was announced.

Hughes told his Twitter website that Shane Watson had been chosen instead of him for the Edgbaston clash, long before Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting was due to reveal his team at the toss.

Australia coach Tim Nielsen confirmed Hughes had been advised to keep his thoughts to himself in future.

"We've spoken to his manager [Neil D'Costa] and his family and made them aware that we need to keep those sort of things in-house until they are announced officially," said Nielsen, who said Hughes had been told "two or three days ago" that he would not play at Edgbaston.

"It's one of those things that's going to happen, especially with the way the world works these days with the different sorts of communication.

"I know he spoke to his family when he knew what was going on, but I can't actually tell you how Twitter works."

Nielsen rubbed salt into the wound for Hughes by confirming that the 20-year-old needed to iron out faults in his technique before resuming a Test career.

Hughes arrived in England touted as the best young batsman in the world, having scored twin centuries against South Africa earlier this year.

He also had a prolific spell in county cricket with Middlesex before the Ashes but has found the going far tougher against Andrew Flintoff and Jimmy Anderson.

Nielsen said: "We felt the fast bowlers playing for England had some success against him. We recognise that they put him under some pressure.

"He does need to go away and work at his game. He probably exceeded our expectations initially with the success he had in South Africa.

"We don't feel that bringing Shane into the team was a gamble, though.

"He batted very well at Northampton last week and we know he can bring a nice balance to the team with his bowling."
