Andrew Caddick, a fast bowler from the generation of England players who experienced a near non-stop diet of misery when it came to Ashes cricket, will retire at the end of this season.
Caddick, now 40, played the last of 62 Tests more than six years ago but has continued to give Somerset sterling service.
Born in New Zealand, Caddick qualified to represent England in 1992 and, 12 months later, was lining up against Australia.
In all, he appeared in four Ashes series - each one was lost - and a total of 18 Tests, finishing on the winning side just four times.
Despite those tough battles, Caddick had a fine Test record, walking away with 234 wickets at a shade under 30 runs apiece.
Rather like the similarly aged Mark Ramprakash, he has continued to produce outstanding results on the domestic front and, again like the Surrey batsman, came close to an international recall several times.
Now zooming in on 1,200 first-class wickets, Caddick revealed his intention to retire after the third day of his county's match against Notts.
"I'm 40 - it's as simple as that," he said. "I wanted to call time while I was still strong, rather than playing on for the sake of it.
"Retirement had to be on my terms, not anyone else's. Somerset are still in with a chance of winning the championship for the first time in their history and that would be the perfect way for me to bow out."
As for his England career, Caddick - who often opened the bowling with Darren Gough - said: "You will always have regrets.
"You can't control selectors or captains and I don't think I always got the backing I deserved."
