England's cancelled clash to be probed

2 Sep 2009

Cricket chiefs will launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of England's second Twenty20 match with Australia.

The start was delayed while staff worked overtime to try to make the Old Trafford pitch playable following heavy rain. But umpires called the game off following a second inspection.

England captain Paul Collingwood said: "The main problem was the run-up area about three metres from the stumps. It was really soggy and would have been pretty dangerous.

"It is a brave call with all those people in the ground but the right one was made as cricketers would've been putting themselves at risk."
