England’s Rose Bowl plans hit by Stuart Broad blow

8 Sep 2009

Stuart Broad will miss the third one-day international against Australia at Southampton after failing to recover from a neck injury.

Broad sustained the damage while diving in the field during the first ODI at The Oval, which ruled him out of the second game of the seven-match series at Lord's two days later.

The 23-year-old bowling all-rounder will link up with his team-mates again on Thursday, and should be fit for the fourth ODI at Lord's.

With England 2-0 down in the series, captain Andrew Strauss would have been desperate to have Broad back for the day-night match at The Rose Bowl.

Without Broad, the onus will once more be on Luke Wright to perform with bat and ball. The Sussex all-rounder impressed in patches during the first two matches, but will be seeking more consistency as England seek to turn around a series which is already slipping away from them.

“We should have won both games,” admitted Wright.

“It's frustrating, especially as we kept them down to manageable totals on both occasions.

“We all seem to be getting starts, without scoring that hundred or playing that match-winning innings, and it's hopefully something we can alter from tomorrow onwards.”

Meanwhile, Paul Collingwood will play for the Delhi Daredevils in the Twenty20 Champions League in India from 8-23 October after being cleared to appear by the ECB.
