Ravi Bopara was dropped by England as they began their Champions Trophy campaign against Sri Lanka at the Wanderers.
Out-of-touch Bopara was left out of the XI, with Owais Shah moving up to number three.
All-rounders Stuart Broad and Luke Wright were recalled after injury as captain Andrew Strauss took the heat off his under-fire batsmen by winning the toss and bowling first.
