I'll always put my country first, says Andrew Flintfoff

Andrew Flintoff today insisted he would rather play one-day cricket for England than earn millions around the world, despite recently rejecting an increment contract, writes Tom Collomosse.

The all-rounder's decision to go it alone, rather than stay under the umbrella of the England and Wales Cricket Board, prompted speculation that he may turn his back on the national team in favour of becoming a globetrotting freelance.

But Flintoff, who is still on crutches more than a month after undergoing knee surgery, claims that if an England one-day series clashed with a Twenty20 tournament such as the Indian Premier League, his country would always come first.

"I would choose England over everything," said Flintoff, who is unlikely to be fit in time for the one-day series in Bangladesh in March.

"I do not have that long left playing for England, so I want to play in every game I can.

"People can give me every different scenario but provided I'm fit and not on crutches, I'll be ready to go for England."
