Stuart Broad losing fitness fight for first one-dayer

18 Nov 2009

Stuart Broad is a major doubt for England's first two one-day internationals against South Africa after failing to recover from a shoulder problem.

Broad sustained the injury almost two weeks ago, and has not bowled in the nets since.

England remain hopeful he will be able to play some part in the five-match series, but captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower are unwilling to take any risks with Broad, especially with the First Test less than a month away.

There was better news for Strauss from his other three injury concerns, bowlers Graeme Swann and James Anderson and batsman Paul Collingwood, all of whom missed yesterday's victory over South Africa A' in Potchefstroom.

Swann and Anderson have side and knee problems respectively, while Collingwood has been given injections to treat discomfort in his back, but all three are expected to train tomorrow and be available for Friday's first one-day international in Johannesburg.
