Arsenal's majority shareholder Stan Kroenke paid £1.4million today to increase his stake to 28.58 per cent.
The deal for 160 shares edges him towards the 30 per cent mark when, under city rules, he would have to make a formal takeover bid.
But it is thought the American's move is an attempt to block Alisher Usmanov from increasing his 25 per cent holding, as the Russian is rumoured to be plotting a takeover of his own.
