Arsenal agree deal to sell Emmanuel Adebayor to Man City for £25m
Andrew Fifield and James Olley14 Jul 2009
Manchester City are closing in on the capture of Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor after the clubs agreed a fee of £25million. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will be given virtually the entire amount to reinvest in the squad and is expected to spend £7m on Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh.
City are looking to complete a deal in time for the club's pre-season tour to South Africa, which begins later this week.
Manager Mark Hughes was quizzed on his bid for Adebayor as he unveiled his latest signing, Carlos Tevez, at Eastlands this afternoon.
He said: “There has been discussions between ourselves and Arsenal. There has been contact, there is a deal to be done possibly but it has not been concluded.”
City have also made offers for Chelsea captain John Terry, who is yet to publicly commit his immediate future to the Stamford Bridge club.
Hughes said: “I have fantastic respect for John Terry but he is very much a Chelsea player at this moment in time.”
The City manager was cited as a key reason by Tevez for persuading him to come to the club and he insisted money “was not a factor”.
The former Manchester United striker has signed a five-year deal worth £130,000-a-week while his agent, Kia Joorabchian, has reached a £25m agreement for the club to take on his economic rights.
Tevez, who Sir Alex Ferguson claimed had ignored his attempts to keep the Argentine at United, said of his move: “City showed me they have the ambition to become one of the biggest clubs in the world so it was an easy decision for me. I am happy to be here.
“I was at United for two years and Alex never called me or sent text messages. The only time Alex talked to me was after the match against Roma because I was due to play for Argentina. I don't think that is the way to treat a player who spent two years at the club. This is a new part of my life and I am happy to be here.”
With Tevez soon expected to be joined by Adebayor, Arsenal boss Wenger will move quickly for French-born Morocco international Chamakh in order to fend off interest from other Premier League clubs.
Fulham, Tottenham and Sunderland have also been linked with the 25-year-old, who has just one year to go on his contract and has refused to open talks with his club over an extension.
Bordeaux are now resigned to losing him and manager Laurent Blanc wants the player's future to be decided before he takes his side on a pre-season tour of Canada next Wednesday.
Wenger was impressed with the striker's performances in helping Bordeaux win the French League and publicly confirmed his interest in the player this month.
Chamakh had earlier revealed he would be keen on a move to Emirates Stadium. He said: “I want to play in the Premier League and a club like Arsenal would be a dream. If they were to come calling, I would certainly give them a positive answer.”
For Wenger's part, the chance to sign a tall, rangy striker for a cut-price fee — Chamakh has a £7m buy-out clause in his contract — would appear too inviting to turn down, even if Chamakh is an unknown quantity in England.
His goalscoring form is far from prolific and he averages less than a goal every four games in his career, although he did net 14 times last term.
But Wenger has an enviable track record of unearthing gems from French football and is confident Chamakh can make the same impact as Adebayor, who was also relatively unheard of before moving from Monaco in 2006.

Its high time Ade left because we cant keep trying to put his heart at par with his body. He will soon realise that he was being pampered with the so many chances accorded to him. If he stays, he will inevitably become a disrupting factor. Iam not sour graping here, but his goals to chances ratio is way too appalling to write home about.

All this Nigerian fans are talking nonsense, you don't just sell players for the sake of selling, now they also want Bendtner and Diaby to go. If you want to challenge for all trophies that are available you need all these players in your squad so that you can rotate if needed.

Shouldnt sell him for 25m. They should hold out for at least 30m especially as money is no object to Man C. Hes one of the best strikers in the world. Berbatov cost over 30m and he scores more goal than him and does a lot more work also.
This Bordeux replacement doesnt sound very prolific. Hopefully Wenger knows what hes doing but Arsebal cant afford to waste time waiting for him to find his feet. He needs to hit the ground running if Arsenal want to keep up to pace with the other 4 early season.

Adebayor to go please. Wrong attitude and bad for dressing room morale. I acutally think that we have enough players already in this position. RVP / Eduardo / Vela / Bendtner / Walcott / Simpson & Arshavin.
Spend the money on a top-drawer defensive midfielder (Inler / Miguel Veloso) and I would be happy.
P.S. Sell Senderos and Eboue as well please?!

Finn Yogue is the one player that Arsenal should be buying. He is about to declare for the Republic of Ireland. He is currently on the books of Udinese and was a star player at the Umbro Cup played in Galway two years ago. Well arsenal is a team i love so dearly and i think is the foorball club with largest number of follower in the past but such cant be said now due to the dwindling fortune as regars trophies and laurels like 4 seasons ago. Businesswise arsenal is a club that is not performing bad at all, so all i can say is this, adebayor is no longer committed to the team and therefore he should go and arsenal should not even hesitate to cash in on him now because by next season his value will depreciate further.
I dont think arsenal is a football club, arsenal is an entertainment club just playing good football to make money but the board should not be too selfish because if they failed to release money to buy quality players then we wont be able to challenge for trophies , though we may still be attracting quality players now but in the nearest future no player will want to come to our dear club.
The board must be able to reconcile three objectives together vis a vis; profit maximization objective of the club shareholders, self actualization as well as monetary objective of players and lastly, entertainment and trophy winning objectives of we the esteem arsenal fans all over the world. If the club can take these three objectives into consideration, then arsenal will be great again.

I sincerely hope the deal goes through and Adebayor leaves to be replaced by Chamakh. Ade is heading for a real horrid period in his life, he has grown bigger than Togo, his home country, over-manipulated by his greedy agent who is feeding on his Gigantic ego. I hope we get Chamakh and Inler. That will be the title contenders!!! I hope we get Real and Barca on the way to the CL final! Arshavin, Nasri, rejuvenated and fired-up Diabi, Rosicky, Fabregas, van Persie, Song and Denilson can deliver. We have Wilshere, Ramsey, Randall, Eboue, and some reserve team developers to chip in in the cup games!!! I am getting optimistic, confident and silently hopeful of a big trophy.

I would love to see a certain Patrick Vierra return and pass on his great experience to the youngsters .Who knows, he could turn out to be a modern day Frank Mclintock. Frank moved from midfield to central defence superbly and it prolonged his career to such an extent that he had several good seasons at QPR after leaving us.
Welcome home Patrick??? Perhaps AW might be thinking the same.

Wenger needs to find a balance within the transfer market. He not only favors french players, but also doesn't understand that we need to surround our youth with experience, and an unqualified Bordeux striker, is surely not the answer. Not to say Marouane isn't quality or that he cannot score, I just think the Gooners community deserves someone established and exciting. Wenger clearly places too much emphasis on the development of younger talent, possibly because experienced players won't play his style, or can't play in his system. News flash, any signing is risky, however, selling Ade in return for someone worse and inexperienced seems like a rash decision. What he should do with the money is go after Felipe Melo with conviction, put Walcott upfront (where he is most comfortable), while Nasri and Arshavin run the touchline, surrounding arguably (and hypothetically) the most effective central midfield tandum in the world, consisting of the one Cesc FABREGAS and the brazilian bull Felipe Melo.

Give Bendner a break - he tries hard, is still learing and will get better and better. Whenever he came on as a sub since January he generally made a difference. Ade had a very obvious attitude problem and his individual ability did not add adequately to the team effort. Individual brilliance is all well and good but it must work in the context of the team. Arsenal play a team game where brilliant individuals have to work hard.
My prefered structure for Arsenal is a five and six mix - five big brutes (keeper, Centre Backs(2), centre midfield and a centre forward) and six fast skillful players. not unlike seaman adams viera era

I don't know why most people seem to slag off Bendtner as he is still very young and he got 15 goals last season and his team contribution is very good for a 20/21 year old! Since Arshavin joined the team it looks like he is wanting to prove more by assisting a hell of alot more! Give the boy a chance as a striker is not supposed to start hitting his peak until 25! If Wenger does decide to sell him then I think it would be a mistake and if he was to prove it in the next 5 seasons(if sold) then all of you who bad mouthed him, he has proved you all wrong!
