Double deal: Carlos Tevez is mobbed by fans and the media today as he arrives for a press conference at Manchester City, who are also about to complete a deal to take Arsenal’s Adebayor to Eastlands

Carlos Tevez completes Manchester City move

14 Jul 2009

Manchester City have officially completed the signing of Argentina forward Carlos Tevez.

Tevez, who left rivals Manchester United at the end of last season, signed what is thought to be a five-year deal after flying in for a medical today, becoming the latest in a line of high-profile acquisitions by the wealthy Eastlands club.

Speculation suggests the Argentina international could yet be joined by Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor and Chelsea captain John Terry.
Tevez was presented to the media today ahead of the Blues' three-match tour of South Africa, which they depart for tomorrow.

Tevez claimed at the press conference that Sir Alex Ferguson did not communicate with him during his time at Manchester United.

The Argentina striker spent two years on loan at Old Trafford before deciding to make the short move to Eastlands after months of uncertainty about his position in the Red Devils pecking order.

Speaking through an interpreter, Tevez said: "I was there for two years and Sir Alex never called or sent any text messages in that time.

"The only time he talked to me was after a match against Roma to discuss a situation about going to play for Argentina.

"It doesn't seem that this is the way to treat a player in two years at the club. it doesn't seem there is a line of communication."

The 25-year-old did go on to thank United, adding: "David Gill (United chief executive), Alex Ferguson and the club's fan base I thank you for the time I spent there, but this is a new life for me and I am happy to be at Manchester City."

Tevez also denied that he had spoken to City's representatives about a transfer in January.
He said: "It is United people talking about signing a contract (in January) but it is not true that it was decided then."

City manager Mark Hughes indicated Tevez may not be the last big-name arrival at Eastlands this summer.

"There may well be opportunities that present themselves," he said.

"There are areas of the team we still want to strengthen.

"We would like to obviously be in a position at the beginning of the season to have a team in place that we think can challenge this year.

"If opportunities present themselves we could possibly buy more players."

When asked whether Tevez represents good value for money, Hughes replied: "Absolutely, for Manchester City, it's absolutely good value.

"From our point of view, where we are in our development, to be able to bring one of the top strikers in world football to our club is a fantastic thing for us as a club, for our fans and everybody connected with Manchester City.

"We're absolutely delighted that Carlos is here."

Hughes confirmed City had spoken to Arsenal over the possibility of signing Togo frontman Adebayor.

"I think there's been discussions between ourselves and Arsenal but, as is my usual response about players that we haven't signed, really it's not the right time or place to discuss that - only in as much as yes there has been contact.

"There's a deal to be done possibly but it's not been concluded as we speak. Until it actually happens, really it's not the time or the place to discuss it here."

When asked if a deal for Chelsea and England captain John Terry could be resurrected, he replied: "I have fantastic respect for John Terry, ever since I saw him as a young player when I was at Chelsea as a player myself.

"He's a great player and an outstanding captain. But he's very much a Chelsea player at this moment in time.

"I have huge respect for him. I think any manager would covet a player of the type of John Terry, but at this moment in time he's a player for Chelsea so we have to respect that."

The only problem with City's spending power is that for the rest of the league the Premier League is becoming very uncompetetive. What do they have to aim for now?
6th and 7th spot Uefa cup places or the FA or Carling cups which the top 5 clubs (Man U, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal) can win with their B teams.

What makes it worse is that teams outside of those 5 are subject to also having their best players bought only to often see them sit on the bench at those top 5 clubs. Sanctioned squad sizes, salary caps and the introduction of the 5 foreign players rules need to be introduced or else we will see the league become as predictable as the Scottish Premier League.

Failing that we need the whole of the league bought out by the Middle East and all teams put on a level financial playing field. That isn't going to happen but we could see those top 5 clubs enter into a European League and that is now looking like a viable prospect and one which many fans outside of those top 5 clubs may now favour. All of the top 5 are spending money so they can reap the financial rewards of the Champions League and the Premier League should be left to those clubs remaining.

Jt , Lescott , and an unnamed right back , will stop Citys spending this summer . Anybody who thinks they will not be major players are living in cuckoo land .Nobody can compete with Eastlands spending power .Watching United , Chelsea , Liverpool , spend millions , I now think power as shifted ,and City will be the team to catch . I cant wait for the season to start . I feel city will finish 4th this season . Then watch them go. Then Anybody will want to come to City .
Unlike Glazier and co , The Arabs have reduced season ticket prices , and given really good discounts on tickets . Its nice to see they have not come to fleece you . Unlike the Glaziers. Talk to any United fan that goes ( easy to do in London ,harder to do if you live in Manchester )They will tell you what a rip off it is .
All in all a great time to be a city fan ,not so good if you have no money . IS IT SAF , SPANISH WAITER ,Mr Ancelloti , Moaning Mr Wenger .

What I find hard to understand is why Tevez, after at least three years in the UK, needs a translator? I guess most of his new team mates won't have English as a first language (Adebayor, Santa Cruz, Robinho, Terry), but it doesn't bode well for communication on the pitch!
