Peter Kenyon: John Terry not for sale

16 Jul 2009

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has reiterated the club's stance that captain John Terry is not for sale.

England skipper Terry continues to be linked with a big-money move to Manchester City.

Reports have claimed City are prepared to pay £200,000 per week to the 28-year-old, whose lack of public comment on the matter has fuelled the speculation.

But Terry has three years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge and Kenyon is adamant he will not be leaving.

Kenyon told Sky News: "I don't know what they are offering but I am confident John is going to remain with us.

"John is a talisman. He is the heart of Chelsea, came through the Academy, he is our captain and has also become captain of England while he has been here.

"We are not going to sell John, so it is irrelevant what another club will offer.

"We are very confident he will be leading us in the years to come."

City have dominated the domestic transfer market this summer having already spent £50.5million on Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz and Carlos Tevez.

With a £25million deal for Emmanuel Adebayor in progress and their interest in Terry, City have taken over the big-spending mantle from Chelsea.

The Blues, who have spent an estimated £700million since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, have been relatively quiet in the transfer market but Kenyon claims that could change.

"It is always fair to say, whatever season, you're always looking to bring in a bit of freshness," Kenyon said.

"This season will be no different and the coach [Carlo Ancelotti] will probably want to influence how we play with another player."

Chelsea today strengthened their financial position by agreeing a new multi-million pound sponsorship deal with current backers Samsung.
The Korean electrical giants, who have sponsored the club since 2005, have extended their arrangement until 2013.

"We are not disclosing the amount but it is significant," said Kenyon. "We are delighted, particularly in these days of financial uncertainty."

The biggest spending club in Europe this summer has been Real Madrid, whose president Florentino Perez recently said he would like the continent's biggest clubs to form a new 'super league'.

Kenyon does not support this idea.

He said: "I don't think there is any appetite from the majority of clubs in Europe, certainly in the Premier League, to drift off to a European super league.

"What we have got with the Champions League is a super league in itself and the players and clubs like it."

Kenyon, who took his current post after leaving a similar role at Manchester United, also poured scorn suggestions he could follow Terry to Eastlands.

"I think that is just some of the mad speculation you get in this world of football," he said. "I don't think there is any issue there."
