Kyles at the double as Spurs spend £8m

17 Jul 2009

Tottenham are set to announce their first signings of the summer after agreeing an £8million fee with Sheffield United for defenders Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker.

Naughton and Walker made a big impression at the Championship club and were also targeted by Everton. However, Harry Redknapp won the battle after raising funds with the £8.5million sale of Didier Zokora to Sevilla.

The arrival of £5m-rated Naughton, 20, and Kyle, 19, means Pascal Chimbonda is certain to leave despite saying this week he wanted to fight for a place in the team. Alan Hutton's future is also looking bleak, while Chris Gunter is expected to be loaned to Nottingham Forest.

Rob Gooner, of South London(Woolwich) you've been well and truly outed.........again!

@ Pierre,
Don't follow your reasoning on this transfer.
Spurs are awash with full backs.
£8m is a lot of money, better spent elsewhere.
The new boys wont get a game so they won't improve.
If they don't improve their value will diminish. So loan them back to SU? Definitely not to a Premiership club, maybe not Championship!
Everton (why snigger at them, a fair-dealing club with an honest manager?) will just buy someone else.
I'm glad you're happy, it's just that I can't see why!

Well done, Shaun. Yet another person [Evs said the same thing a couple of days back] has seen through the veneer of Rob - he is a Gooner, who pretends to be a Tottenham supporter in order to publicly drag the club down, as though he is a fierce critic - I think he's actually the poster who, when the subject is the Goons, calls himself "Rob Gooner".

By the way, Rob, what is so wrong about 6th spot for a team you so clearly are trying to deride? It means europe and probably this season a place above Villa and Everton, as Man City and the top 4 look to have the top 5 spots covered.

Finally, to those of you who are not able to discern that Rob is a Gooner, there is a clue to be had. See if you can find it. Sorry, no prizes for getting it right.

People are now turning their backs on Gareth Bale & Chris Gunter they are still the best left & right sided defenders on the earth let spurs fans raise their voices to send bale on loan to milan or roma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gunter and bale are two top class players and great back up.. why are we spending 8 mil on two players not as good as them?? i think our defence is fine.. as you can see from the amazing home record... i think we have great cover aswel at the back so id jus worry bout the left side which bale could play and up 1 more up top

Shaun - you are clearly deluded, as I am neither a gooner nor a woman. I am entitled to my opinions as a realistic Tottenham fan, who believes that our defence is in need of surgery. King & Woodgate are fine, but need quality cover. If we intend breaking into the top 4, then our full-backs simpy are'nt good enough. Can you seriously see Assou-Ekotto, Bale, Chimbonda or Gunter making it into any of the top 4 sides ahead of the players they have? Mark my words, whenever you look at the table next season. We will finish no higher than 6th place.

Those 2 kids from Sheffield will delight and surprise you if given the chance, Naughton can play anywhere in defence and Walker is both rb and cb. He is actually the better player of the two.

Gooner Rob, you must have been at the Emirates when Hutton was strutting his stuff prior to his injury. Watch him go next season.you dont think much of Bale or Gunter.
It's it just as well Harry doesn't listen to your philosophical meanderings, he would be up at the Emirates buying all your old cast offs.
What is it that get's you off on this 'cloak and dagger' persona.
I'll bet your a woman really.

If it is true, I have every confidence that they will follow in the footsteps of Bale and Gunter. Spurs seems to make a real "project" of young fullbacks.

Trust me when I say that these two kids are very special talents.

Both will be full England players in the very near future.

Harry knows what he's doing with these kids.

These two young players looked excellent in Sheffield United's defeated play off side. However, will they make the step up from the Championship to the Premiership? I would like to see Chimbonda sold, who I couldnt understand why Harry re-signed last January. I would also like to see Hutton sold, when not injured he has looked a very poor signing for such a high fee. I dont think much of Bale or Gunter & although he had a reasonable season Assou-Ekotto still worries me, as does Corluka who looks far better at Centre half rather than as a right-back. Hence, these 2 new players should compete at right-back & Harry needs, in my opinion, to look out for 2 quality left-backs & cover for Ledley King to improve our defence vastly. Otherwise, all we can hope for is 6th place, at best.

Shame to see two young talents wasted at spurs. White hart lane is a graveyard for full backs. It's ruined some of the brightest prospects in british football.

Feel sorry for the Utd boys if this is true.

Naughton desperately wanted to join Everton where his career would have flourished. Now he's having to join a dead beat club with no prospects of starting. He'd be better off staying where he is.

What a waste.

Time (you know, that rarest of commodities in the Premier League) will determine the wisdom of these signings; but I personally think that we will come up short yet again unless at least three quality players come in.

Be careful, Harry, the natives are getting restless.

relax, he's building for the next 2 seasons..Hutton will start, Corluka will be back up for King/woody. Those 2 youngsters will both be loaned out once we've sale is complete.. very smart harry. Everton end with nix.. hahahaa

Harry, I'm baffled. I thought I told you we need a central midfielder, a left sided midfielder,a central defender and a striker. How many right backs have we now. Hutton, Corluca, Chimbonda, Gunter, Naughton and Walker. Ah well thats that position covered.
