Dropping down: Brian Clough had a short spell in charge of Brighton

Big names who have dropped down

22 Jul 2009

After Sven-Goran Eriksson's surprise appointment as director of football as Notts County we look at some other examples of lower league teams springing a surprise with the appointment of a big name.

Bobby Moore - Oxford City

City pulled off an outrageous managerial coup in 1979 when they lured England's World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore to the club - despite being in the eighth tier of English football. The one season Moore spent at City was unsuccessful though - the club were relegated for the second time in their history. The most significant factor to come out of the spell was it gave Harry Redknapp, who was Moore's assistant, his first taste of management.

Kevin Keegan - Fulham

After a successful spell in charge of Newcastle, Kevin Keegan surprisingly took over the role of Chief Operating Manager at Division Two Fulham. He was then given the role as manager just before the play-off semi-final, after the sacking of Ray Wilkins. He did not manage to galvanise the Cottagers in time for that game, however he did secure the Division Two title the next season, after considerable backing from Mohamed Al-Fayed. He left soon after to concentrate on his role as England manager.

Ian Rush - Chester

Ian Rush was appointed as Chester boss in August 2004. Despite losing his first game in charge, the former Liverpool striker started well with the club going on a two-month unbeaten run. However, the success did not last, with City suffering a number of heavy defeats, including a 5-0 hammering at the hands of rivals Shrewsbury. Rush was heavily criticised for his long-ball tactics and came under increasing pressure from the club's board. He resigned at the end of the season, after guiding the club to safety.

Sir Stanley Matthews - Port Vale

After 709 football league appearances, Sir Stanley Matthews' first management role came in 1965, when he was appointed general manager of Port Vale, alongside Jackie Mudie. His main role initially was to develop the youth team, however he was handed full control at the end of the 1966-67 season. His one season was disastrous - an 18th place finish (in Division Four) was made worse by expulsion from the Football League, due to financial irregularities. The club's immediate re-election was not enough to stop Matthews tendering his resignation.

Brian Clough - Brighton

In 1973, Brian Clough was one of the best young managers in the country - if not the world. He had transformed mid-table Division Two side Derby into Division One champions. Success in Europe followed, with the Rams reaching the semi-final of the European Cup. It was some surprise when he left County and joined the Seagulls soon after. He did not have same success on the south coast, winning only 12 of 32 games.

Paul Gascoigne - Kettering

In October 2005, Paul Gascoigne was appointed boss of Conference North side Kettering. Many hoped it would be just what the former England midfielder needed to get his life back on track after a series of alcohol problems. However, this was not the case - he only lasted 39 days, before being sacked on December 5, after owner Imraan Ladak said he found the former Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers man "very difficult to work with".

Paul Ince - Macclesfield

Paul Ince took on a real challenge for his first managerial challenge - taking over Macclesfield, who were at that time bottom of the Football League and some way from safety. However, 'The Guvnor' managed to revitalise the Silkmen, ensuring they survived on the final day of the 2006-07 season.

Tony Adams - Wycombe

Wanderers plumped for former England captain Tony Adams in November 2003 - but the club were relegated from League One in his first season. They did make a relatively good side in the next term though, ending August top of the pile in League Two, however results went downhill from there and Adams resigned a year after taking charge due to personal reasons.
