Leyton Orient in tune after crushing Newcastle

27 Jul 2009

Jason Demetriou admits thrashing Newcastle 6-1 has provided Leyton Orient with the perfect pick-me-up.

Orient put the beleaguered North East club to the sword on Saturday at Brisbane Road thanks to goals from Jimmy Smith, Sean Thornton, Scott McGleish, Tamika Mkandawire, Ryan Jarvis and Harry Baker.

Now Demetriou wants Orient to use the result as a springboard for their League One campaign, which kicks off against Bristol Rovers on 8 August.

The midfielder said: "It's hard not to get carried away when you get a result like this.

"There was millions of pounds worth of players out there and for us to match them as we did was fantastic.

"But we'll knuckle down on Monday and take this as a big boost for our confidence. We want to take it into the start of the season."

Newcastle were poor but I thought Orient played very well with confidence and scored some excellent goals.

I wish them the best in League One.

Nice ground too.

Good to read comments about the game from our side. All the national reporting has been about how badly Newcastle played but no praise for our performance and the way we took our goals. All those million pound players didn't match us and they were trying so let's hope this will be our season!
