Benni McCarthy calls for more strikers

27 Jul 2009

Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy would welcome some support on the forward line to help Rovers become more of a threat to their Barclays Premier League rivals.

The South African was paired with both Jason Roberts and substitute Paul Gallagher in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Leeds but claimed there was still room for another attacker at Ewood Park.

Since selling Roque Santa Cruz to Manchester City and Matt Derbyshire to Olympiacos, manager Sam Allardyce has been trying to find a suitable replacement at the right price.

After abandoning an attempt to sign Real Madrid's former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and being priced out of bidding for Portsmouth's Peter Crouch, Allardyce has been scouring home and abroad for viable options.

He missed the friendly at Elland Road to watch Russia striker Pavel Pogrebnyak in action for Zenit St Petersburg.

A loan deal for Chelsea's Franco di Santo has been mooted for a long time and Allardyce is still hopeful of securing the services of the Argentinian, although Stamford Bridge boss Carlo Ancelotti was impressed with the player's performances on the recent tour to America and has spoken about his importance to the team.

McCarthy, who rediscovered some form when Allardyce took over last December, believes Blackburn need a new face up front.

"We need extra and that little bit more quality to raise our game," he said.

"I know my strength and Jason Roberts knows his strength and we know we really complement each other.

"Maybe the manager will pick me for some games because of what I have over Jason and in other games maybe he will pick Jason for what he has over me", McCarthy told the Lancashire Telegraph.

"We don't have that player that has the qualities of both of us. That is what we had with Roque.
"Roque had what I could do and what Jason could do and that is why he was the ideal striker."

"With a bit of luck we can get that again. I don't know who but I would be glad to get a good name player to bring something new to the team - and a lot of goals.

"If we can get one more quality striker and if it means one of us has to sacrifice then we would rather that as long as we win games and keep ourselves in the top half of the league."
