Robbie Keane: Crouch arrival provides good competition

29 Jul 2009

Robbie Keane has welcomed the arrival of Peter Crouch to Tottenham, insisting the added competition can only be good for the team.

England striker Crouch completed his move to White Hart Lane in a £9million deal earlier this week while last season's top scorer Darren Bent headed to the north-east to discuss terms with Sunderland.

That means Crouch, Keane, Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko will compete for the places in the Spurs' forward line this season.

Crouch and Defoe previously combined successfully under Redknapp at Portsmouth, meaning that little and large partnership could potentially be reunited.

But, far from being concerned over his place in the side, Keane believes the incentive to perform will spur him on.

"I am looking forward to playing with him," said the Republic of Ireland captain. "He is a tremendous player and he is a good addition to a good squad that we already have.

"As a striker it is always good to be kept on your toes and we now have four good strikers and it is good to have that competition as it now means we all have to perform otherwise someone else is going to come in.

"It is important to have that competition and it will only help us to do well."

Jamie, my mate

we are a big club, shame Harry doesn't see it that way..
we still need some quality defender, centre midfielder and left midfielder (we been struggling for one of them for ages

Jamie - the 'mess' started when we signed Bent, as we has four 'number one' strikers, which meant that we either tried to accommodate more than two in the team at a time or upset two by leaving them on the bench. Hence, a disatisfied Defoe left in the January 2008 transfer window. Followed in the summer by Keane & Berbatov & now Bent appears to be on his way. As for Keane & Defoe I sincerely hope they regain the form they showed during their previous time at Tottenham. Although, Keane has looked strangely out of sorts since he arrived back. I throughly enjoyed Jol's period in charge & hope that 'Harry' can match or better the two consecutive 5th places. However, this seems highly unlikely as the big four have established themselves & we now have competition form Man City, Aston Villa & Everton.

To intervene between Rob the gooner and Jamie (who seems to have two names, or is the Big massive Huge Club Jamie just another gooner), let's assume that Sir Harry knows more than us about football and let him earn his corn, us some silverare and respect from our enemies (and we know who they are, don't we?).

Rob i do not remember this mess you refer to,I seem to remember Keane & Defoe playing out of their skins when given the chance. As you so often quote two 5Th place spots,I would hardly call that a mess.It will be good to see Keane & Defoe fighting for their place again,After all they have had their spats moved on & come back.

Looking good to me so far.All that is needed now is a quality center half & left midfield player along with Huntelaar to pair up with Keane & who knows what could happen.
UP THE SPURS

We may have the same problem that kicked off the mess when Martin Jol was in chage, which is that we have four strikers who all consider themselves first choice. I cant imagine any of the four settling for a place on the bench, especially as we will have a limited amount of games in the forthcoming season, as we failed to qualify for europe.

Up there with Downing in the overrated stakes. Shame he won't be getting a game now.

Same as last season.
