Linesman struck by plastic cup

30 Jul 2009

Red Bull Salzburg face UEFA charges after an assistant referee was hit in the head by an object thrown from the stands during their Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Zagreb.

Martin Wilczek of the Czech Republic sustained a cut above his left eye when he was hit by a plastic cup in injury-time.

The cup first hit Dinamo forward Mario Mandzukic, who was unhurt, before deflecting onto hit Wilczek.

Referee Pavel Kralovec whistled for the end of the match, which was drawn 1-1, immediately after the incident.

Chairman Thomas Partl of UEFA's disciplinary committee said that Salzburg could be punished by a fine or might have to play its next European home game in an empty stadium.

Let's hope that Blue Baby learns to read properly so next time he'll be able to identify who's the culprit to be punished.

This would appear to be a more far serious incident than the scenes at Stamford Bridge which provoked such outrage. Let's hope that Dinamo Zagreb have a much great degree of opprobrium heaped upon them, and a much more severe sentence.
