Crying game: Steve McClaren was left shocked as his FC Twente side crashed out of the Champions League at the qualifying stage

Late own goal sends McClaren's men out

Steve McClaren was left shocked after a 95th-minute own goal saw his FC Twente side crash out of the Champions League at the qualifying stage.

The Dutch club, led by the former England manager, had drawn 0-0 at Sporting Lisbon in the first leg and seemed set to go through after taking the lead last night after only two minutes.

But deep into injury-time, Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio headed the ball goalwards from a corner and it went in off Twente's Peter Wisgerhof.

McClaren said: "You are never sure until the end of the game but the players didn't deserve this. It's the cruelest way to go out. I have a dressing room full of devastated players."

Meanwhile, Celtic manager Tony Mowbray has told his players not to panic as they hope to avoid the same fate as Twente.

The Scots trail Dynamo Moscow 1-0 ahead of tonight's second leg of their third qualifying round tie in Russia.

Mowbray said: "There's a need to calm my team down. I don't want them over-hyped.

"The best teams are the most disciplined and we have to position ourselves in such a way that we're able to control this game."
