Carlos Tevez stopped by police for driving licence check

11 Aug 2009

Premier League footballer Carlos Tevez has been stopped again by police in a driving licence check just six months after his £140,000 Bentley was impounded.

The Manchester City striker was pulled over on the A34 in south Manchester yesterday and asked to produce a valid licence within seven days.

In February, traffic officers seized his white Bentley Continental GT Speed from the hard shoulder of the M60 near Stretford, Manchester, after it emerged he did not have a full UK driving licence.

Police stopped him on that occasion as they suspected the car's windows were too dark.

Tests at the roadside confirmed the tint was illegal.

The Bentley was later returned to the Argentina international and he was not prosecuted for any driving offences.

The vehicle he was travelling in yesterday was not seized as part of the police inquiries.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "At 2.45pm on Monday 10 August, police stopped a car on the A34 in south Manchester to check the driver's details.

"The driver has been asked to produce his licence to police within seven days."

It is unclear what nationality licence the footballer holds but sources suggested it may be Spanish which, as a European Community country, would entitle him to drive legally in Britain - although UK residents are still required legally to register their details.

An Argentinian licence holder could only drive on UK roads for 12 months before being forced to apply for a provisional licence and sit a driving test in this country.

Tevez, who moved from Manchester United this summer, has played in the Premier League since joining West Ham at the start of the 2006/07 season.

The maximum penalty for driving without a valid licence carries a £1,000 fine and six penalty points.

Tevez, 25, had six points endorsed on his licence at Tameside Magistrates' Court last month after he was caught speeding on the A34 in Cheadle in February.

He did not attend the hearing and the matter was dealt with in his absence as he was also fined £525 for failing to provide his documents.
