Misery in Norway: Gary Caldwell is sent off during 4-0 defeat

Sorry Scotland are planning to recall David Weir

13 Aug 2009

Scotland manager George Burley is ready to hand David Weir an international recall after seeing his side's World Cup hopes hit by a 4-0 hammering in Norway.

The Rangers skipper, 39, was one of the stars when the Scots held Norway to a draw in October but was left out for the return game at the Ullevaal Stadium.

It was a dire night for Burley, as defender Gary Caldwell was sent off and Steven Caldwell and Christophe Berra picked up groin and hamstring injuries respectively.

It means Burley is short of options ahead of their crucial matches against Macedonia and Holland at Hampden next month, where Scotland need all six points to have a chance of a play-off spot.

And the manager admits he has been in touch with Weir to check on his situation.

He said: "Who knows if Steven and Christophe will be fit? But I spoke to David and he would be available, so that is something we've got to look at."

Blackburn's Morten Gamst Pedersen scored twice while former Liverpool midfielder John Arne Riise and Erik Huseklepp were also on target for Norway.

Meanwhile, Croatia won 3-1 in Belarus to close the gap on England in Group Six to seven points.
