Redknapp disappointed by Bentley arrest

14 Aug 2009

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was disappointed by events which led to the arrest of Spurs winger David Bentley.

The England midfielder was arrested after crashing his car in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Bentley, 24, was charged with drink driving and later issued a public apology for his actions.

He returned to training today and is available for selection for the Barclays Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday.

Redknapp said: "He's very lucky that no-one was injured, so he's got off quite lightly. David Bentley is a good lad, a smashing lad.

"He's made a mistake. I spoke to him this morning and he realises he's made a mistake.

"He's still here and available and has trained well. He's really low about what he has done."

Hertfordshire Police confirmed yesterday Bentley had been charged with a drink driving offence and released on bail to return to St Albans Magistrates' Court on August 28.

In a statement on the Spurs website Bentley wrote: "I should like to apologise to my club and the supporters for my actions which led to my car accident last night and my subsequent charge.

"It was wholly unacceptable and I fully appreciate that as a professional footballer I have a duty to behave in a reputable and responsible manner.

"I am thankful that nobody was injured in the accident. This has been a wake-up call for me both personally and professionally."
