Roberto Martinez not getting carried away with opening day victory

17 Aug 2009

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez insists he will not allow their opening victory over Aston Villa to distract his players from a longer-term goal.

The Latics surprised many with a 2-0 win over Martin O'Neill's side, who are expected to challenge for a top-six place again this season.

Martinez is making his debut in the Barclays Premier League, having left Swansea in the Coca-Cola Championship to take over from Steve Bruce this summer.

Sceptics suggested the Spaniard may find life in the top flight tough and, although Saturday's result will have surprised some critics, Martinez has stressed his squad cannot afford to bask in the glory of the victory.

Wolves, promoted as champions last season, are the visitors to the DW Stadium tomorrow and the Latics manager is keen not to allow standards to drop irrespective of the opposition.

"Behind the scenes we have worked very hard to be competitive in the Premier League," said Martinez.

"It is full credit to our players they kept their heads and worked as a team and we will make sure we go into every game being competitive.

"We are very realistic about how difficult it is to win games in the Premier League and we will not lose the sense of reality.

"It is a step forward but there is still a lot to improve and work on.

"The last thing you can control in football is results. All you can control is the way we dictated play, the way we stopped Villa playing and overall I was delighted with the performance.

"It was important to do certain things very well. It was a day that everyone worked extremely hard for - but we set the standard and unless we work as hard as we did we are not going to be successful."

Wolves were comfortable winners of the Championship but are among the teams tipped to be relegation contenders this season and after a 2-0 home defeat to West Ham on Saturday they will be looking to get points on the board as soon as possible.

Martinez, who will have his first competitive match at home for Wigan since featuring as a player in the League One play-off semi-final first leg against Reading in May 2001, will treat every opponent the same.

He wants his team to focus on performances rather than results as he seeks to build a squad capable of challenging for Europe and, unlike some of his rivals, does not want the focus to be purely on winning home games.

"I know Wolves well from last season when Mick McCarthy took that league by storm and they are going to be tough opposition," he said.

"We will try to be competitive in every single game we play in. I don't think we can afford to discard the away performances.

"But we shouldn't put too much pressure on ourselves to get points at home.

"If the level of performance is good at home and away then we will get the rewards.

"All that counts is the amount of points we have at the end of the season.

"That is why now it is more about setting standards and levels with performances, individually and collectively, than results.

"Yes we want to win games and get points but it is the way we are going to do that early on which is going to determine for us whether it is a successful season or not."
