Neil Harris runs rings around Oldham

Millwall 2-0 Oldham

Neil Harris proved to be worth his weight in gold but left The Den several carats lighter.

The Millwall striker was not allowed onto the pitch as a first-half substitute against Oldham Athletic because he was still wearing his golden wedding ring - which he usually plays with wrapped under tape.

But referee Andy D'Urso insisted on it being removed and it took a combination of soap and Vaseline at half-time to see it finally prized off.

Once Harris made it onto the pitch, he set about wrapping up a 2-0 win for The Lions with an injury-time header.

The club's all-time leading scorer was perfectly placed to nod home Jason Price's selfless cut-back to seal a first three-point haul of the season in the 92nd minute.

David Martin had fired the home side into a 12th-minute lead when he collected Steve Morison's flick and crashed his shot in-off the underside of the crossbar.

Oldham spurned a golden chance to level, but Pawell Abbott's controversial penalty was brilliantly kept out by 'keeper David Forde's one-handed save.

Millwall manager Kenny Jackett said: "The officials insisted that the ring would have to come off. It was farcical really.

"There's jewellery and then there's jewellery. If it was a pronounced ring or a necklace that could swing into somebody, then that's a different matter.

"But we're talking about a very tight, circular ring that poses no threat to anybody and even has tape over it just in case.

Despite Jackett's frustrations off the field, he was pleased with events on it: "I'm delighted with the result, but perhaps we could have scored the second goal twenty minutes before we did."
