Shock: Nicolas Anelka scored the only goal of the game as Bolton beat Manchester United in 2007

Top flight upsets

20 Aug 2009

The Barclays Premier League is often termed a four-horse race with the big four of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool seen as the dominant forces.

The smaller clubs, particularly those who earned promotion to the Premier League the previous season, are expected to be nothing more than cannon fodder for the bigger clubs.

But occasionally a smaller club comes up with a shock result such as Burnley's 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Here we look at five other shock results in the Premier League era:

Arsenal 1 Hull 2: September 27, 2008

Arsenal took the lead through a Paul McShane own goal but the stars of the Emirates Stadium failed where the Arsenal youngsters had thumped Sheffield United 6-0 in the Carling Cup earlier the same week. The Tigers struck back with a stunning strike from Geovanni before fellow summer signing Daniel Cousin headed in the winner.

Wolves 1 Manchester United 0: January 17, 2004

A Wolves side containing former United players Denis Irwin and Paul Ince shocked a United team which included Roy Keane and Cristiano Ronaldo. Kenny Miller scored the only goal for one of the highlights of a season which saw Wolves relegated back to the Championship.

Liverpool 0 Barnsley 1: November 22, 1997

In a season which saw Barnsley thumped 7-0 by Manchester United, 6-0 by Chelsea and West Ham and 5-0 by Arsenal, the Tykes upset the odds to triumph 1-0 at Anfield. Ashley Ward scored the only goal of the game before half-time in what proved to be one of few successes that season as Barnsley were relegated.

Bolton 1 Manchester United 0: November 24, 2007

Bolton went into the home match with United having won only twice in the Premier League that season.

But former Manchester City striker Nicolas Anelka netted after 11 minutes and a strong finish to the season saw Bolton retain their Premier League status.

Manchester United 0 Bolton 1: September 11, 2002

Sam Allardyce was famous for getting the best out of fading stars and players that had never been during his time in charge at the Reebok Stadium. But it was homegrown talent Kevin Nolan who scored the only goal which left Sir Alex Ferguson blowing a gasket come full-time at Old Trafford.
