Carlos Tevez in line for weekend start

21 Aug 2009

Mark Hughes could be set to name Carlos Tevez in his Manchester City side to face Wolves as the manager revealed he had not given up the chase for Joleon Lescott.

City have had two bids rejected for the Everton central defender but are still keen to secure his services.

Argentina striker Tevez came on board in the summer after two seasons wearing the colours of Manchester United but has been hampered by a nagging heel injury.

However he had a run-out in the victory against Barcelona in a friendly and with Robinho and Emmanuel Adebayor, suffering slight ankle and groin injuries respectively, could be handed his chance.

Hughes said: "It was important Carlos got an hour under his belt. He came through that with flying colours.

"He looked strong and could have played longer in fact. But it is important we do not expose him to 90 minutes too soon. I think we have done it in the right way and he is probably ready now."

Hughes is having to play patience in his bid to bring Lescott to Eastlands but is not giving up the chase.

"We are not at that point at this moment," said the City boss. "When we feel there is nowhere else to go and it is not going to happen, then we will walk away.

"We do not think we are quite at that point as yet. Only time will tell."

Hughes is still in the market for fresh faces before the window closes.

He said: "We are just trying to go about our business and bring good players to the club.

"We have been successful in that respect. Almost all the players we hoped to bring we have been able to do.

"Some we have missed out on but that will always happen. That's a process you legislate for and make sure you have other targets.

"We have been quite active in the window but there is always speculation and I am sure that is not going to go away when it closes."

Hughes wants his side to build on the opening day victory at Blackburn in front of their own fans.
He already senses a shift in mood in the dressing room this season.

"You sense there is a change in mentality in the group. Last year we were not strong enough in that department, " said Hughes.

"We've had a big turnaround in personnel. About 14 to 15 players have gone out of the club. It changes the dynamic of the dressing room.

"We want to play entertaining football and I think we did on most occasions at home last year.

"We are attack-minded. If we keep our home form strong and improve our away form even by a smaller percentage we will have a better season than last year."

Wayne Bridge should have recovered from a hamstring strain in time for the game but Roque Santa Cruz, Vincent Kompany and Michael Johnson remain sidelined.
