Chairman wants Sol Campbell to be ambassador

26 Aug 2009

Executive chairman Peter Trembling sees new signing Sol Campbell as an ambassador for Notts County in their quest to return to the promised land of the Premier League.

The ambitious League Two club, who were founder members when the Premier League was formed in 1992, completed the shock signing of the former Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth defender yesterday on a five-year deal.

Campbell is the stellar arrival at Meadow Lane since Sven-Goran Eriksson's appointment as director of football last month.

Other high-profile signings include Kasper Schmeichel, Karl Hawley and Lee Hughes.

Campbell has bought into the vision of new owners Munto Finance, who completed their takeover of the club in the summer, and believes he will play in the Premier League again with the Magpies.

Trembling sees the 34-year-old's acquisition as an integral part of County's journey back to the top flight.

"We've got real ambitions to be a Premier League football club," said Trembling.

"First and foremost we have got to get out of this division but we see Sol as one of our ambassadors - a pillar if you like that will take us all the way to the Premier League. He is an important part of what the club's ambitions are.

"As with Sven-Goran Eriksson as director of football, he will be an integral part of what we do as a football club in the community.

"This is a club that was in the top flight less than 20 years ago and we plan to be back there in a lot less than that."

Magpies manager Ian McParland has stated he would like to bring more players to the club before the transfer window closes on September 1.

Asked if there would be any more big-name arrivals at Meadow Lane in the near future, Trembling added: "That's down to the manager and the director of football. They tell me who they want and some of them we get and some we don't.

"We've said all along that we've got to get the balance right. We're getting funding that's right for getting us out of League Two and it will be the same for League One and thereafter.

"Sometimes we've got to make investments in the likes of Sol and Kasper because these are individuals that will take us all the way.

"But hopefully the existing playing squad that we have at the moment will carry us some of the way as well."
