Tottenham's interest in Portsmouth pair Niko Kranjcar and David James was at the centre of a hectic day of negotiations ahead of the transfer window closing this evening.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is closing in on Kranjcar as cover for injured midfielder Luka Modric and he needs another goalkeeper, although signing a 39-year-old in James would represent a major shift in transfer policy as the club normally target players with re-sale potential.

Redknapp was in the market for a defensive midfielder earlier in the summer when he looked at Patrick Vieira, although he is also a fan of his Inter Milan team-mate Sulley Muntari after working with him at Pompey.

Pompey are looking to strengthen before the deadline and could move Tal Ben Haim from Manchester City, Slovakia defender Jan Durica from Lokomotiv Moscow or Algeria midfielder Hadj Aissa from Saudi Arabia side Al Ittifaq.

Sulaiman Al Fahim, who has agreed to buy the club, has previously suggested he would move for Amr Zaki from Zamalek, although the Egyptian side want the former Wigan striker to stay with them until at least January.

In deals completed yesterday, Stoke signed Uruguay midfielder Diego Arismendi from Club Nacional in a deal which could rise to £4.84million.

Sunderland announced they completed the big-money signing of defender Michael Turner from Hull, on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Wolves confirmed the signing of Austria striker Stefan Maierhofer from Rapid Vienna and Ecuador midfielder Segundo Castillo on a season-long loan from Red Star Belgrade.

West Ham signed defender Manuel da Costa from Fiorentina, and allowed forward Savio Nsereko to move in the opposite direction.

The Hammers are aware of interest from the Italian club for Matthew Upson but would only sell for a suitable offer or to a Champions League team.

They are waiting for bids from Aston Villa or Everton for James Collins, with a transfer helping them sign another striker. Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh is still a possibility.
