Peter Kenyon has hailed the new contracts signed by Ashley Cole, John Terry and Didier Drogba as "a key part" of Chelsea's summer activity and says midfielder Joe Cole should be the next star to put pen to paper.

The Blues made only one big signing this summer, with Russian Yuri Zhirkov arriving from CSKA Moscow for £18million.

But England duo Ashley Cole and Terry followed Drogba's example by signing new contracts to commit their long-term futures to the club and Kenyon believes that is as important as signing three world-class players.

The Chelsea chief executive said: "We've concentrated very hard this summer in retaining the players we have. Inevitably in a transfer window it is all about who you bring in but we shouldn't overlook who we have got.

"If you look at Didier Drogba, John Terry or Ashley Cole, they are world-class players that could walk into any other team in Europe and I am delighted that we have retained them."

And Kenyon believes Joe Cole will be next. He has been out of action since January with a persistent knee injury and his current contract expires next June.

But Kenyon said: "Joe is just back in training and we are all delighted to see that. We want - and he wants - to remain at Chelsea."

He is also thrilled with Chelsea's perfect start - four wins from four under Carlo Ancelotti since the Italian coach arrived from AC Milan this summer.

Kenyon added: "I'm delighted with where we are and think we have had a great start. Carlo has made a big impact already. We are playing good football and it is evident that this team are together and that Carlo has got everybody playing for him."

And Kenyon revealed Chelsea are burning with desire to win both the Premier League and Champions League.

"At this stage of any season we think we can win everything but there is an added edge," Kenyon said. "I was at the Champions League draw with John Terry last week and he made the point that he is fed up with walking past the trophy - he wants to pick up.

"That is the desire we've got at Chelsea. We want to get the Premier League trophy back and we want to have the Champions League trophy for the first time."
