In demand: Bryan Robson is wanted by the Thailand FA to be the new manager of their national team

Thailand chiefs target Bryan Robson to replace the returning Peter Reid

Former England captain Bryan Robson is being lined up to succeed Peter Reid as Thailand coach.

Reid officially ended his one-year tenure as national team coach earlier this week to join Stoke as assistant to Tony Pulis, leaving Thailand in search of a replacement with crucial back-to-back Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore looming in November.

And Football Association of Thailand president Worawi Makudi insists he is already well on the way to securing the services of former Middlesbrough, West Brom and most recently Sheffield United manager Robson.

"He is interested in coaching Thailand. I think the chances of him taking the job are more than 50 per cent," Worawi said. "Everything should be finalised by next week. We want him to come here next month so that he can watch some Thai Premier League matches in the final weeks of the season."

Reid signed a four-year contract with the South East Asians in September 2008 and had suggested continuing his role as Thailand coach alongside his work with the Potters, but Makudi rejected the proposal and his deal was terminated by mutual consent.

Robson, who quit as Sheffield United manager in February 2008, is set to be handed the same mandate as Reid and will be charged with continuing the improvements seen under the former Sunderland manager, with the ultimate goal of qualifying for a first World Cup finals in 2014.

Thailand have made a steady start to their qualifying campaign for the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar after securing draws against Jordan and Iran.
