More blue than Green: West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green is watching his team struggle against sides they should be beating

Robert Green admits West Ham's poor display at Wigan Athletic ended his post-World Cup qualification high.

The Hammers keeper was in fine form for his country during last week's 5-1 demolition of Croatia to seal England's spot at next year's World Cup finals in South Africa.

But he could not keep out Wigan at the DW Stadium as a Hugo Rodallega finish in the second-half sank Gianfranco Zola's side.

Green, who produced a superb save from Jason Koumas just seconds before Rodallega followed up, was disappointed afterwards.

He said: "The result does put a dampener on it because what you do with your club reflects on what you do internationally.

"Wednesday was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my career.

"You want to take the guys here on to another level from the experiences you've had with England and we didn't do that."

Zola's men are not getting the results this season against sides they have defeated in previous years.

The Wigan loss comes on the back of a draw at Blackburn and Green expects a big improvement from the Upton Park squad. "Realistically with one shot on target from the whole game, you're not giving yourself a great chance of coming away with a result if you're going to concede," he said.

"After this result, it's not a great start. We've played Blackburn and Wigan away, two games we won last season and we've got a point from those two games without scoring a goal.

"That tells you everything you need to know. It's a reality check and we've got to wake up."
