Genoa top table after thrashing Napoli

14 Sep 2009

The city of Genoa can bask tonight in the glory of having two of the three table-topping teams in Serie A.

Genoa lead the way on goal difference from Turin-based Juventus and Sampdoria with each team having won all of their first three games.

Genoa came from behind to beat Napoli 4-1 in an explosive game this evening.

The hosts were forced to play over an hour with 10 men after Domenico Criscito was given his marching orders in the 28th minute.

Marek Hamsik then put Napoli ahead in the 41st minute before Napoli's Hugo Campagnaro followed Criscito for an early bath in first-half stoppage time with Sergio Floccari subsequently netting from the penalty spot.

Giandomenico Mesto (55th minute) and Hernan Crespo (75) struck before Salvatore Aronica was sent off for a foul on Rodrigo Palacio inside the area with Houssine Kharja this time converting from the spot in the 88th minute.

Samp also did it the hard way in their 1-0 win at Atalanta.

Daniele Mannini scored the only goal after 64 minutes, 12 minutes after the visitors had former Atalanta midfielder Fernando Tissone dismissed for a second yellow card.

Juve won 2-0 at Lazio last night.

Four-time defending champions Inter Milan are fourth after goals from Samuel Eto'o and Diego Milito proved enough to end Parma's stubborn resistance at the San Siro.

Alberto Gilardino scored as Fiorentina beat Cagliari 1-0 while goals from Giampiero Pinzi and Sergio Pellissier gave Chievo a 2-0 win at Bologna.

New Roma boss Claudio Ranieri got off to a winning start thanks to an 89th-minute strike from substitute John Arne Riise against 10-man Siena.

Massimo Maccarone put Siena ahead but the match turned Roma's way in six second-half minutes when first Phillippe Mexes equalised with 73 minutes on the clock before Siena midfielder Paul Codrea was sent off for a foul on Francesco Totti that earned him a second booking.

The visitors pushed forward with their extra-man advantage and broke through a minute from the end when Riise fired in a free-kick from 25 yards.

Palermo's Igor Budan grabbed a last-minute equaliser to deny Bari, who went ahead early through Riccardo Allegretti, while Antonio Di Natale grabbed a hat-trick as Udinese registered their first win of the season with an emphatic 4-2 defeat of Catania.

The hosts trailed 2-1 at half-time but then Italy forward Di Natale took centre stage, dragging them level 10 minutes after the restart before two more goals - the first of which came from the penalty spot - settled an entertaining encounter.

Antonio Floro Flores also scored for the home side with Takayuki Morimoto and Giuseppe Mascara replying for pointless Catania.

Yesterday's other game, between Livorno and AC Milan, finished goalless.
