Ben Foster taking his chance to catch Sir Alex Ferguson's eye

Ben Foster is relishing the chance he has been given to show Sir Alex Ferguson that he can play at the highest level.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper has enjoyed an extended run as Manchester United's No1 while Edwin van der Sar recovers from a hand injury.

Prolonged spells on loan to Watford and on the treatment table have resulted in Foster having to bide his time since joining the club from Stoke in 2005.

Yet, he has played in all five League matches this season and will be in goal again for United tonight when they start their Champions League campaign in Turkey against Besiktas.

"I've really enjoyed being involved so far - it's what I've wanted," Foster said. "When you have a solid run in the team you can look forward to games in advance and settle down a bit more

"I'm happy with what I've done so far and hopefully there's more to come."

While keen to impress his club manager, Foster is also focused on making an impression on England boss Fabio Capello.

"Obviously, the World Cup is in sight at the end of the season and it's therefore important that I do well in any games I play," added the twice-capped keeper.

"I've started the season reasonably well and played every game so far, and long may it continue."

Besiktas opened their defence of the Turkish League title with just one win from five matches and were beaten 3-0 on Saturday at Galatasaray.

But Foster's opposite number in goal tonight, former Barcelona keeper Rustu Recber, believes United may still be unsettled by the atmosphere.

"The level of hostility at the Inonu is unique," Recber said. "United have been to Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, but the Besiktas fans are in a league of their own.

"They are the noisiest, the most passionate, and they stay with the team for 90 minutes. The noise is incredible. It will be a new experience even for those United players who think they have seen everything. Our fans can really make it hell."

United boss Ferguson (left) is not worried about the decibel level, though, and believes his players have the experience to cope with the noise.

He said: "The atmosphere is unique to Turkey with the fanaticism. At Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, the fans were in the stadium at 12 o'clock.

"It's going to be a volatile atmosphere, but we hope that the experience we have had in last couple of years helps us with whatever we face."

Michael Carrick will start in place of Paul Scholes tonight with Park Ji Sung coming in for Ryan Giggs.
