Siege mentality brings out the best in us, says John Terry

John Terry believes Chelsea will show Porto that his side thrive in adversity.

Chelsea begin their Champions League campaign tonight without Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa, who were suspended by UEFA for three and two games respectively for their conduct after last season's semi-final exit to Barcelona.

The club are also reeling from being banned by FIFA from making any transfers until January 2011 after they were found guilty of inducing Gael Kakuta to break his contract with Lens in 2007 to join them instead.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have already used the siege mentality to help them win their first five games to top the Premier League and Terry says they now aim to show their fighting quality in Europe.

The Chelsea skipper said: “We always seem to come together in the face of adversity. There have been a few obstacles put in front of us in recent times but we come through it and shown our quality.

“This is the start of a huge European campaign. The manager has come in and started well, he knows what it is all about at this level and, hopefully, he'll be able to take us that extra step in the final in Madrid at the end of the season.”

Terry is also convinced Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou will ensure Drogba won't be missed, even though he is the club's top scorer with four goals.

He added: “We have to remember what Kalou and Anelka are capable of and we still have the firepower to score goals.”
