Hard times: Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool have had a tough start

Steven Gerrard turns focus to title challenge after Euro boost

17 Sep 2009

Steven Gerrard has warned Chelsea the title race will start to turn around this weekend, after Liverpool made it three wins in a row with victory over Hungarian side Depreceni last night.

The Reds may have looked unconvincing as Dirk Kuyt's goal earned three points at Anfield but coming as it did on top of victories over Burnley and Bolton, skipper Gerrard remains upbeat. He believes his side have built up enough momentum to overturn a frustrating start, which has left them fifth in the Premier League, six points adrift of leaders Chelsea, by beating West Ham at Upton Park on Saturday.

Considering Manchester United, in second, face third-placed Manchester City and Chelsea take on
fourth-placed Tottenham on Sunday, a win over the Hammers would re-ignite the Kop's title hopes.

Gerrard said: “It was a tough start for us this season because we lost two game close together and we knew it was going to take time to recover from that.

“But we're slowly getting back to where we want to be. It's a big weekend for the title race, so hopefully we can get a win and turn things around.”

Liverpool had to wait until first-half injury time to open the scoring last night and Gerrard admits they weren't at their best.

But he added: “There's more to come from us and we're improving game by game.”

When was the last time Gerrard confronted an opponent on the pitch after been tackled? The answer is he has never got involved in a one to one with another player. Rather strange that, as most players do. Could it be that he doesn't feel so brave when left to defend himself without the help of his usual thuggish bodyguards?

No surprise seeing Stevie Me falling over twice last night in an attempt to win penalties. WHY is he such a media darling after these theatrics? Not to mention the nightclub incident!!!

Spot on, Charlie.

Take the only two players who ever do anything for them out, and Liverpool have been nothing more than a mid-table team at best for years.

Fact.

If that was an improvement last night, then they must have been totally useless in previous games. The Liverpool Captain is clutching at straws and as long as their unhinged, megalomaniacal Spanish Manager remains at Anfield they're going to win absolutely nothing.........again.
