Tony Mowbray plays down confrontation

21 Sep 2009

Celtic boss Tony Mowbray played down the spat between Artur Boruc and skipper Gary Caldwell during his side's last-gasp win over Hearts at Parkhead.

Suso Santana's fifth-minute strike for the Jambos had sent the Hoops' fans into a state of high anxiety which appeared to transmit itself to Boruc and Caldwell after the home side had almost conceded a second goal before the break.

The excitable Poland goalkeeper parried Andrew Driver's shot and Caldwell raced back to clear the ball off the line - but both players squared up to each other in apparent rage and for a moment the situation threatened to get out of hand.

All was forgiven when Chris Killen's equaliser 10 minutes after the break and Glenn Loovens' injury-time winner took Celtic two points clear of Old Firm rivals Rangers at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League, a boost for the club after their disappointing Europa League defeat by Hapoel Tel Aviv on Thursday night.

"If the supporters see players arguing with each other I would suggest it is because they are passionate about the game," Mowbray said.

"Certain fans in Tel Aviv didn't think there was enough passion shown, so you can't then complain if footballers are demanding of each other.

"They walked through the door of the dressing room, shook hands and patted each other on the back.

"It is the emotion of football, it is emotion like the fans get emotional and for me it is a positive."

For the second successive week Celtic had to fight back after conceding an early goal in front of their home fans, a situation which Mowbray admits he will have to address.

He said: "It is an obvious concern that we lose a goal after five minutes and we have to chase the game.

"We are all disappointed with that aspect because we talked long and hard about concentration levels in these sort of games.

"But in saying that, Hearts will take points off other teams."

Csaba Laszlo mourned a couple of important lapses in concentration from his side, although the Jambos boss was unhappy at Dougie McDonald after the referee found four minutes of injury-time which allowed Loovens his dramatic winner following a Danny Fox corner.

Laszlo said: "I am disappointed to lose in the last seconds and we had two bad decisions from my players, Lee Wallace and Suso Santana.

"Lee thought he was 100% sure that it was a goal kick so he let it go but it was a corner and they scored the winner from it.

"For the equaliser, Santana had the chance to clear but he thought it was a foul.

"I accept their decisions, it can happen with anybody, maybe next time they will be more clever or make a different decision.

"The biggest question I had was where four minutes of injury-time came from?

"I can't give you the answer, it wasn't me who gave four minutes, you must ask the referee."
