Unhappy memory: but Philippe Senderos has the chance to impress after Johan Djourou was sidelined

Returning Philippe Senderos told to make the most of his new start

Arsene Wenger has urged Philippe Senderos not to waste his opportunity after deciding to give the Swiss defender a second chance with Arsenal.

The 24-year-old returned from a season-long loan spell at AC Milan to be told he was surplus to requirements at Emirates Stadium after the arrival of Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax.

Senderos failed to agree terms with numerous clubs including Everton before the transfer deadline passed but after Johan Djourou was sidelined for six months with a serious knee injury, he is now set to start tonight's Carling Cup third-round clash with West Brom.

Wenger said: "His position at the moment is that we have four centre-backs and he is one of the four because Djourou is out for nearly the whole season. In this job you always have to be ready and when you get the chance you can do well.

"If you are not ready, everybody will say he is not good enough to play for Arsenal. Now he is back with us so we will just give him a chance.

"I don't believe he is starting his career again because we know how good he is, but it is a new start, let's say, because we have already seen his quality."

Wenger is also backing 17-year-old winger Jack Wilshere to make significant progress this season.

England manager Fabio Capello suggested there may be an outside chance Wilshere could be part of the squad to travel to next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa and Wenger said: "This year we feel that he is strong, more mature, and I'm sure that he will show that tonight."
