Wounded Jonathan Woodgate facing yet more surgery

Harry Redknapp today revealed Jonathan Woodgate may need a third operation on his groin as Tottenham continue to battle with a defensive injury crisis.

Woodgate, who has not played for Spurs since the end of last season, has already had two operations, which have failed to resolve the situation. The 29-year-old has had an injection this week to try to clear up the problem but if that fails to work, further surgery would appear inevitable.

Ledley King will have a scan this week on the hamstring injury he sustained in the
3-0 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday, while Sebastien Bassong has also been ruled out of tomorrow night's Carling Cup third-round tie at Preston, meaning Michael Dawson may have to be rushed back into the centre of defence.

Redknapp said: “We will give it 10 days to see the result of Woodgate's injection. Hopefully it works, but if not he may have to have surgery of some sort. The problem is that he has already had surgery so I don't know how much he can keep having.”

Bassong has been given the all-clear for
the head injury he suffered in the defeat
at Stamford Bridge, but Spurs are now worried about a sore knee he sustained in the same game.

Dawson's Achilles injury has kept him out of action since the home win over Newcastle late last season, but the absence of King, Woodgate and Bassong means he is likely to play some part at Deepdale.

Capatain - Stop making things up, Rosicky was not injury prone before he joined Arsenal, as he played 150 games in Germany before joining Arsenal. My comments were not negative about Tottenham in particular, I merely fail to understand why clubs would purchase aging injury prone players & give them expensive long term contacts. Tottenham were an example of this, taking into account Ledley King's chronic knee problem only compounded the foolishness shown when purchasing Woodgate. The reason I 'bother' to make comments on other teams is simply that I can & there is a freedom of speech in this country. Tottenham fans, in particular seem very touchy. Mind you never having won the Premierhip or competed in the Champions League is quite a downer. Looks like another season chasing Carling Cup glory!

Robbie Redgunner, let me tell, Rosicky was well known to be injury-prone, it's just that Woodgate as an english player had a higher profile in this country.

All of your postings are negative about Spurs and, taking into account you are a Goon, that has to be for a reason, which I suggest is obvious to anyone with half a brain. As for your opinions - quite apart from the question - why bother when it's not your team - I'd ask you to keep them to yourself when it comes to Spurs if you haven't got anything other negative vitriol to say.

34 out of 38 league games last PL season doesnt suggest injury prone to me? Also the season before he played in a high percentage of games. In fact since his got back to fitness at Madrid he has played in over two thirds of all league matches every season.....FACT. No doubt very comparable to Ferdinand, Terry, Carvahlio so called CB stars of the Prem.

Nothing surprises me about this, he is and always will be the guy 'who could have' I was happy he lasted as long as he did. Not sure what games Paul has been watching but Assu has been one of our best these past 6 games, his crosses and goal against Liverpool have been awesome. He has been our best defender, it's Hutton who scares me every time he comes on the pitch, for Spurs or Scotland he is a liability. He is the star in every goals against highlite reel this season.

I wish Harry would get on with it,lost to the two best teams in the league and now complaining about the defence! Found the money for Crouch but knew all along defence was our problem.

I am sure we spent good money on the Sheffield boys, what did we do, lend one back!

Mr Wenger is able to draft in younger players, you can't tell me there is no-one in the reserves or academy who could not step in and stake a claim in the defence!

Come on you Spurs, lets get another winning run started!

Captain- Rosicky was not injury prone before we bought him, unlike Woodgate! As for gloating, if you are able to read my comment, it merely states that Tottenham shouldnt be surprised that an injury prone player gets injured & that clubs in general should take care when purchasing such players. Ted - a hint of sarcasm detected, if read carefully my comment proves accurate & is not specifically biased against Tottenham in particular. As a club I dont particularly dislike Tottenham, indeed they have been of little challenge to my team for many years. However, Levy has been a poor chairman in my opinion & Harry is becomming extremely tedious.

How interesting that after losing to Manchester United Harry Redknapp praised how they played.

After losing to Chelsea he did not talk about the injuries to his squad and bemoan his fate, but talked about the game!

Ah, yet more words of Gooner wisdom on behalf of Spurs from the man with the funny name from Woolwich.

The first question is what interest could it possibly be to Gooners about Woodgate's injury - unless it is to gratuitously gloat.

In fact, until recently his appearances for Spurs have been impressive for a so-called injury-prone player. Certainly no worse than Rosicky at Les Goons, who has been noticeable by his long absences, and how much did they spend in him?

As a spurs fan it mystifies me that our first choice centre back pairing are as injury prone as each other. As far as the anton Ferdinand rumour resurfacing I hope that is pure speculative paper talk because if the future of this club is Bassong and Ferdinand at the back or even bassong and Dawson, we will remain the pretenders we are quite poitedly labelled. No top four team would have their best centre backs being injury prone and I think as much as it pains me to say Tottenham need a new back four completely. Era's come and go and so do players of great skill and stature but consistensy and goals to nil scorelines are what matter at this level and so far this season we've seen none of those.

Dawson hasn't come good, hes far too prone to impulsive and costly mis timed challenges that usually result in a goal against, Ledders and Jonno can't seem to play together long enough (although if both were completely fit would be awesome) and Assou has bad distribution problems. This is where we will win and lose games this season as everything in front of this would walk into most premier league teams. I say fix the leaky defence and fix the whole team.

If a footballer becomes suspect to injury on a regular basis, the first thing I would look at is his diet and alcohol consumption.

You wouldn't buy a car with a poor history, so why do clubs insist on shelling-out more and more for players that make little positive contribution? What do managers think is going to change?
What about pay & play contracts like Michael Owen is apparently on- wouldn't they make more sense than what clubs currently get bullied into by agents?

I'm sure Woodgate would rather play footie than be sidelined during the season.

However he can use his time spending his fabulous weekly salary that millions would only dream of earning.

Injury-prone centre-back is injured. What a mystery that is.

Tottenham shouldnt be mystified by this latest injury. Woodgate always has been & always will be injury prone. Clubs should take a players injury history into account before parting with large transfer fees & wages.
