Wembley is world class

25 Sep 2009

Wembley is the only stadium among the European bids for the 2018 World Cup to meet the required standard, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said today.

England, Russia and joint bids from Spain and Portugal and the Netherlands and Belgium are hoping to get the tournament.

“None of them has what we could call a World Cup stadium, except at maybe Wembley,” Valcke said. “Most of the stadiums will have to improve.”
Even Barcelona's Nou Camp would need work.

“It's a beautiful stadium, but how do you put a number of TV trucks around? How do you put a hospitality village for 10,000 people?” Valcke said. “You need space around the stadium.”
