Carson cites complacency for Crystal Palace defeat

28 Sep 2009

West Brom captain Scott Carson believes his side may have been guilty of complacency in their surprise Coca-Cola Championship defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Albion lost ground to fellow high-fliers Newcastle after slipping a 1-0 reverse at The Hawthorns but have an early chance to exorcise any demons when they visit Barnsley tomorrow night.

Carson concedes there may have been too great an element of expectation ahead of Saturday's match and does not want a repeat.

"The run was obviously going to end sometime but we didn't expect it to be on Saturday," the goalkeeper told the club's official website www.wba.co.uk.

"We knew it would be a tough game but, like everyone else, we didn't expect to lose it. They gave us a tough game but we never got going from the first whistle and when you let your foot of the gas in this league you get what you deserve.

"Maybe we were a bit complacent and the performance just wasn't there. We just never clicked.

"It could be a blessing in disguise because it might give us the kick up the backside that we maybe needed.

"We let our foot off the gas and we were punished, so we have learned we can't do it. Teams will come to The Hawthorns and make it difficult for us, and stop us playing football.

"Crystal Palace certainly did that and we never made the breakthrough, and paid the price.

"But the result on Saturday put things back into perspective."
