Naismith fury as he's denied 'clear' penalty

30.09.09

Steven Naismith was left seething last night as he was denied a penalty in Rangers' 4-1 defeat by Sevilla at Ibrox in the Champions League.

With the scores tied at 0-0 in the 37th minute, Naismith was bundled to the ground inside the penalty area by Sevilla defender Abdoulay Konko.

Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson ignored the claims and it was Konko who then headed Sevilla ahead five minutes into the second half.

Further strikes from Adriano, Luis Fabiano and Frederic Kanoute gave the Spanards maximum points, leaving Rangers, who grabbed a consolation through Nacho Novo, bottom of Group G with one point.

Naismith said: "It was a stonewall penalty. The ball ricocheted off their player and I took my touch beyond him and he caught my leg.

"Why I would go down when I was one on one with the goalie?"
