Portugal optimistic over Cristiano Ronaldo ankle

Portugal remain hopeful star forward Cristiano Ronaldo will be fit for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Hungary on Saturday.

The £80million man missed Real Madrid's 2-1 defeat to Sevilla at the weekend with an ankle problem but is set to return for his country who are trying to secure at least a play-off place to reach next year's finals in South Africa.

National team physio Henrique Jones told Spanish newspaper Diario AS: "We are optimistic with his sprain. We believe he will be fit for Saturday, but on Wednesday or Thursday he will undergo an ultrasound to gauge his progress."

Portugal are third in Group 1, three points behind group leaders Denmark and two behind Sweden, who currently occupy the play-off spot.

Hungary are level on points with Carlos Queiroz's side but have scored one goal fewer.
