Anwar Shafi denies involvement with Notts County

7 Oct 2009

The mystery surrounding Notts County's ownership has deepened following Anwar Shafi's claims that he has nothing to do with the Coca-Cola League Two club.

A press release on Notts County's official website 10 days ago attributed comments to an Anwar Shafi confirming the "significant holding" of the Shafi and Hyat families in the Qadbak investment trust that owns the football club.

Shafi admitted representatives for Qadbak have attempted in recent weeks to recruit him "with a view to employment as a spokesperson or with an ambassadorial role" but that he had turned them down.

"It's not me," Shafi told The Guardian. "This statement was not made by me. I have no investment of any sort in Qadbak. I have no role in the club."

He added: "I was shocked. I learned of it through a friend who found it on the internet four days later."

The news comes with the Football League board set to meet to examine the controversial takeover by Qadbak, which is registered in the British Virgin Islands and claims to control £100billion in assets. The new owners have yet to pass the league's fit and proper persons test.

Notts County has yet to comment on Shafi's claims.

Since taking control at Meadow Lane, Qadbak have wiped out the club's debts, hired former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson as director of football, and promised to propel the club into the Coca-Cola Championship within five years.
