Firing blanks: Kelly Youga’s acrobatic attempt misses the target against Oldham to leave Charlton without a goal for three games

Leon McKenzie backs himself to end Charlton drought

Goals have been hard to come by for Charlton in recent times but Leon McKenzie is aiming to ensure the club's promotion push does not go off the rails.

Phil Parkinson's side remain second behind Leeds in the League One table but have failed to hit the net in their last three outings and will be boosted by an addition to their striking options.

McKenzie, 31, arrived at The Valley in August on a free transfer and is now recovered from a ruptured Achilles tendon injury.

He made a debut as a substitute in the goalless draw with Oldham and is confident he can add a new dimension to Charlton's front line.

He said: "I know once I regain match fitness I am capable of getting goals. I've proved that throughout my career.

"I feel there are goals in this team, but it's going to be frustrating because other teams always want to beat the teams at the top. So you maybe have to take the draws sometimes.

"On another day we could have won this game, we had the chances. Hopefully, the goals start flowing again and I'd love to be part of it."

McKenzie began his professional career with Crystal Palace and, after spells with Peterborough, Norwich and Coventry, now has more than 100 goals to his name.

That experience should lift Charlton in the coming months, but they also need a change in fortune.

Miguel Llera and Kelly Youga both hit the crossbar against Oldham, while Izale McLeod should have scored with a second-half opportunity from eight yards out.

Promotion back to the Championship is the target at The Valley and McKenzie is hopeful he will prove a good omen.

He said: "I've been promoted twice before and hope to do so again with Charlton.

"But I've had some real bad luck as well. When you rupture your Achilles, it doesn't matter how well you have looked after yourself, it's something you either do not come back from at all, or you come back stronger.

"I believe I've come back stronger, and once the games start coming for me I hope to become a good addition to the team."

Parkinson, meanwhile, does not believe there is need to press the panic button despite the goal drought.

Charlton boast one the division's best goal differences and he is confident they will start scoring again soon.

Parkinson said: "I can not fault our attitude over the 12 games we have played so far. We are one of the top scoring sides in the league and there is always going to be a period when you do not score.

"It was disappointing not to take any of our chances against Oldham, but this may prove to be an important point. I thought a lot of our play was good, we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net."
